Hielscher Ultrasonics - Laboratory Ultrasonic Devices

Ultrasonic Laboratory Devices

Hielscher ultrasonic laboratory devices are compact, easy-to-use and extremely versatile. They can be used for the processing of a variety of organic and inorganic materials in a wide range of volumes.

Typical applications of ultrasonic homogenizers include sample preparation, disintegrating and cell lysis, homogenizing, dispersing and disaggregation, particle size reduction and the acceleration of chemical reactions (sonochemistry). Hielscher offers a wide range of ultrasonic homogenizers to be used for these applications in a wide range of volumes from approx. 50µL to 2000mL. The selection of the ultrasonic processor depends on the sample volume to be sonicated. The table below, lists all laboratory devices and the recommended volume respectively.

Designed for the Lab

Hielscher ultrasonic laboratory devices are designed for the lab. They are very simple to setup. The handheld and standmounted devices combine generator (power supply) and transducer (converter) in a single housing. This saves desktop space and weight. Hielscher is the only manufacturer of handheld ultrasonic processors. The only plug to be connected is the main power plug, that fits into standard 115V~ or 230V~ outlets. The operation of the ultrasonic homogenizers is very simple. The devices are tuned to the optimal resonant frequency automatically, so there is no need for manual adjustments. The ultrasonic amplitude is adjustable from 20 through 100%. Alternatively to the continuous operation a cycle of intense sonication bursts can be a adjusted, e.g. for the sonication of heat-sensitive tissue.

Accuracy for Reproducible Results

For the preparation of samples as well as for the development of new applications, it is important to have a good control over all sonication parameters in order to obtain reproducible results. Hielscher ultrasonic devices allow you to control the amplitude of sonication. This is the most important sonication parameter. The mechanical amplitude is monitored constantly in the device to eliminate any deviation from the adjusted value. This makes the amplitude independent of other factors, such as immersion depth, liquid temperature or viscosity. Therefore, you can repeat each sonication by selecting the same amplitude again. Flow Cell Reactors for Larger Volume Processing

Hielscher ultrasonic laboratory devices can run continuously – 24hrs/7days, if needed. By using the laboratory devices in combination with flow cell reactors, you can process larger sample volumes. In this case, the liquid is pumped into the reactor made of glass or stainless steel. For example, a UP400St can process approx. 10 to 50 liters per hour. There it is exposed to defined intense sonication before it reaches the exit of the reactor cell. In order to cool heat-sensitive material during sonication, the flow cells are jacketed to improve heat dissipation.

Sound Protection Boxes for Noise Reduction

When applied to liquids, ultrasound causes cavitation. The cavitational noise is in the human audible range. Sound protection boxes are available for the ultrasonic laboratory devices to reduce the noise emission to more convenient levels. This is recommended for typical laboratory environments. The sound protection boxes include a stand pole and an adjustable table (acrylic glass) to hold the sample.

Compact Lab Homogenizer

The ultrasonic processor UP50H is typically used for the sonication of small lab samples. This homogenizer allows for the handheld or stand-mounted emulsification, dispersing, dissolving or cell disruption. The ultrasonic processor UP50H (50 watts, 30kHz) is the smallest model of our aesthetic laboratory devices, that are only supplied by Hielscher Ultrasonics in that compact form. The UP50H is used in particular in medical, biological or chemical laboratories, where small volumes need to be sonicated. Application fields are found mainly in the analytical field with applications such as the disruption of tissues, the cracking of bacteria or the homogenizing of samples in the food industry.

UP200ST with VialTweeter for Simultaneous Sample Preparation

In laboratories, it is often necessary to prepare multiple samples simultaneously at the same process conditions. The VialTweeter enables for the simultaneous sonication of up to 10 vials at the same intensity. Thereby, the VialTweeter is a reliable lab homogenizer for homogenization, emulsification, dispersing and deagglomeration, extraction, lysis, dissolve, as well as the degassing of fluids. Due to the principle of indirect sonication, no probe is immersed into the sample so that cross-contamination and sample loss is completely avoided.

Ultrasonic Inline Micro-Reactor

The GDmini2 is an ultrasonic micro-reactor for the indirect, temperature-controlled sonication of liquid media. Applications include: Homogenization, emulsification, particle synthesis, solvent extraction, cell lysis and fragmentation. The GDmini2 is an ultrasonic homogenizer in the shape of a straight glass tube. It homogenizes, disperses, disrupts cells or emulsifies liquids that flow through the glass tube. It can be used as an inline reactor for single-pass or recirculated ultrasonic processing.

This is a unique and easy-to-use design. By coupling intense ultrasonic vibrations to the glass tube, the tube walls vibrate ultrasonically and therefore sonicate the liquid flowing through the tube. It is much more intense, uniform and consistent that an ultrasonic tank.

Ultrasonic Sieving in the Laboratory

The ultrasonic processor UIS250L is used for the acceleration of sieving processes alternatively or complementary to the classical low frequency vibrators. Especially in case of very fine powders ultrasound is often the only possibility to enable the sieving process at all.

Ultrasonic Laboratory Ring Sieve

Hielscher Ultrasonics has developed a worldwide unique technology especially for exciting common laboratory ring sieves (according to DIN ISO 3310/1 or ASTM E 11-95) with diameters of 200mm or 8 inch. A ring sonotrode that fits the sieve is excited by the ultrasonic processor UIS250L. The ring sonotrode (RIS) transmits the oscillation via the sieve frame to the screening surface. With the help of the clamping fixtures the neighboring sieves are also excited. In contrast to the ultrasonic sieving processes known until now, in which each sieve needs its own ultrasonic excitation, this is a very inexpensive and flexible solution.

Another advantage of this exciting principle is that the transducer is situated outside the material to be sieved. This technology can be used for dry or wet sieving, as well as for cleaning the sieves. The ultrasonic components can be retrofitted in already existing sieving towers and can even be used in combination with vibrators. In this case the delivery scope consists only of the ultrasonic processor UIS250L and the ring sonotrode, which will be fitted into the common laboratory ring sieves of most manufacturers.

UP200_TD CupHorn

In combination with the accessory TD_CupHorn, the UP200St_TD turns into a powerful ultrasonic cup horn. The cup vessel comes with an additional vial holder for sonication of up to 5 eppendorf tubes. The cup horn can be used as high intensity ultrasonic bath for direct and indirect sonication. Whilst the sample is filled directly in the cup horn for a direct sonication, the cup horn is used as an ultrasonic water bath for indirect ultrasonication. With the vial holder, up to 5 sealed vials (e.g. Eppendorf tubes) can be processed avoiding aerosols and cross contamination. Therefore, the ultrasonic cup horn is the perfect tool to sonicate sterile or pathogenic samples. It allows for the simultaneous sonication of multiple tubes under identical process conditions.

UP200_TD Flow-Cell Reactor

With the flow cell attachment, the UP200St_TD functions as a small scale recirculation setup for the ultrasonic processing in a continuous flow-through mode. The UP200St_TD FlowCell is equipped with 2 feed ports of 2.5mm inner diameter. The reactor can be closed with a lid to ensure a closed process environment.
