Enriching Our Environment With Cleaner Oceans and Beaches

World Bank states that over 11 million metric tons of plastic waste end up in our oceans annually, accounting for a staggering 85 percent of all marine pollution. Plastic pollution kills an estimated 100,000 marine mammals, millions of seabirds, and a vast number of fish.

According to Ocean Conservancy and McKinsey, Southeast Asia accounts for a significant proportion of global microplastic pollution and more than half of the plastic waste in the ocean comes from just five Asian markets alone.

Determined to prevent further deterioration of this worrying situation in the region, DKSH continues to organize beach and ocean cleanup programs in several markets we operate in to raise awareness among our communities of the urgent need to stop polluting our oceans.

In Myanmar, our team of over 200 volunteers participated in the fourth Beach Cleanup and Coral Conservation Seminar at Ngwe Saung Beach. It is an annual project initiated and organized by the Myanmar Underwater Federation to raise awareness among the public regarding the importance of proper waste disposal and coral conservation.

Similarly, over in Malaysia, we organized an ocean clean-up program at Pulau Tenggol, Terengganu to help protect the marine environment. Our team of scuba divers successfully removed 10 kilograms of marine debris, planted some corals, extracted about 50 crown-of-thorns starfish, and collected about 35 kilograms of trash from the shoreline.

DKSH in Malaysia also recently carried out a nationwide beach clean-up program across eight different states in conjunction with International Coastal Clean-up Day. A total of nearly 457 kilograms of coastal trash was collected through the program.

At DKSH, our purpose is to enrich people’s lives. We do so by providing reliable access to high-quality and responsible products and services, creating sustainable value for our partners, and contributing to raising the quality of life in the communities we operate in by generating jobs, perspectives, and opportunities for people’s development and growth.
