Myanmar: India’s gateway to Southeast Asia

Asia is on track to be the world’s center of gravity

China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) extension into Myanmar is expected to bring new economic growth for both markets. Part of the BRI’s plans includes the construction of a China-Myanmar Economic Corridor to link the two locations via trains, roads and ports as well as the development of Myanmar’s port at Kyaukpyu.

However, it is also seen as opening more trade and economic opportunities for India as well to access the fast-growing Southeast Asian markets. India’s northeast is considered the country’s gateway to Southeast Asia as it shares more than 1,600 kilometers of border with Myanmar.

Over the last six years, India’s Act East Policy has further strengthened India-Myanmar relations. In 2019, India-ASEAN trade reached nearly USD 97 billion and is projected to exceed USD 300 billion by 2025.
