Non-Destructive Core Analysis Laboratory Keeps Oil Producer Flowing in Malaysia

Challenge

Our customer required a laboratory solution to help them maximize data recovery and minimize storage space of its highly degenerated and brittle core samples. These cores are also very expensive to acquire as they provide crucial insights including porosity and permeability characteristics that are key for scientific research study including mineral exploration targets and reservoirs. The company uses these insights to achieve business sustainability through future ventures of cleaner production of upstream and downstream operations.

Another key requirement of this project includes analyzing and digitalizing over 30 kilometers of legacy cores in a timely and cost-efficient manner with no damage done to the cores.

Approach

We worked with Geotek Limited, who is a recognized leader in non-destructive core analysis instruments and services for the Malaysian market, on identifying the best solutions for our customer.

After conducting thorough discussions with the customer’s compliance and technical teams to learn about their requirements and challenges, we recommended Geotek’s non-destructive core analysis solution using X-ray and near-infrared technology, which will protect the properties and safe handling of the core products.

As part of the implementation project, we set up a mobile containerized laboratory at the customer’s premises with core scanning instruments involving radioactive and gamma sources. We also formed a specialized geologist team and commissioned all the instruments required.

Result

The successful collaboration culminated with the customer’s grand official opening of its Geo Sample Centre and the DKSH Geotek 360 Lab in October 2022. The customer is also on the right track to achieve nearly 6 kilometers of core scanning by the end of the first year of the project’s installation.

As a further testament to the accomplishment of the project, the Malaysian project team was bestowed the prestigious DKSH Fantree Award in 2022.
